An AvGeek, short for an “Aviation Geek” is a term that came to life in recent years. This rather nerdy-sounding word is a description of someone who is a big fan, or an enthusiast of aviation.
As a matter of fact, some AvGeeks have such a passion for the aviation industry that it borders on obsession with anything that flies!
Where can you spot AvGeeks?
You see them around every airport. Passionately filming and taking pictures of anything that flies you can find them located in strategically located spots around the airport that has an advantageous view of the planes.
AvGeeks in Social Media
Otherwise, they are all over social media, especially planespotters. They just love to proudly display their plane pictures in social media channels, such as Twitter.
For the love of aviation
An AvGeek often had a love for flying since he or she was very young. However, it is interesting to note that a lot of these geeks are not professionals belonging to the aviation or the airline industry!
Personalities of aviation enthusiasts
You’ll find every type of personality among the geeks. Some are laid back just having fun. They are listeners, they have a great pleasant personality, always eager to learn more about aviation.
Others are hellbent on establishing a reputation for how much they know about aviation. This annoying type of geek is opinionated, even to the point of being obnoxious, insisting on “their way or the highway”, unwilling to listen to what others have to say. This person may not have ever flown a jet in their life. Yet they won’t hesitate for a second, telling a Boeing 787 airline pilot how his or her jet should be flown!
Why aren’t more AvGeeks aviation professionals?
The answer is simple: They love and admire aviation as a hobby!
To them, it is a fun hobby, yet they have no interest in pursuing a professional career in aviation on their own.
These people are experts on the livery (paint scheme) of any airliner. They can immediately recognize most airplane types, and even tell you the airplane type just from the sound of its engines.
Spot-quiz an AvGeek on which airport uses the identifier EZE. He or she will answer “Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires, Argentina,” faster than you can blink your eye!
Many of the geeks are also highly skilled photographers and planespotters, applying their own professional skills using aviation as their canvas.
Then we have the geeks who just LOVE to be on an airline as a passenger. These fans fly all over the world at their own cost, admiring as well as reviewing airlines.
